We at Peninsula Group Stays have plenty of experience hosting large groups for Golfing Getaways on the Mornington Peninsula. Here we share some of the benefits of choosing this part of Victoria for your next golfing escape whether with a group of friends or as part of a Corporate Retreat. Both Bayviews from Drury Lane and Spacious Sorrento Retreat provide ideal bases for your next golf trip.
The Courses
Mornington Peninsula provides the enviable combination of some of the best golf courses in Victoria with stunning ocean or bays views, and all within an easy drive of Melbourne. This is capped off with a great variety of golf courses ranging from links courses to resort style courses. Many are public access, and some have special deals for groups of 4 booking together, so it is worth planning ahead. Of note, even the public access courses rank highly in Australia’s top 100 Golf Courses.
The Dunes, Rye
Located on Browns Road, Rye, this 18 hole par 72 and 9 hole par 33 facility was designed by Tony Cashmore and is consistently voted number 1 public access course in Australia. Providing a challenging links-style course over 300 acres of dunes, you will think you have been transported to Scotland, were it not for the local wildlife. t maintains very high standards of course maintenance and customer service.
Moonah Links, Fingal
Not one, but two world-class championship courses that have hosted the Australian Open (Open Course). The Legends Course is shorter and friendlier, taking in different environments including ancient Moonah woodland and open links. Moonah often offers special deals for groups of 4, so be sure to check on their website or call.
St Andrews Beach, Fingal
A classic links course in the Scottish and Irish tradition designed by Tom Doak (viz Barnbougle, Tasmania). A few blind shots, but the wide fairways offer plenty of choice in the way to play each hole. The greens here can be very challenging, as can the homeward stretch between the 12th and 15th during prevailing SW winds. Offers great value if you book online.
Portsea
One of the older Mornington Peninsula Courses. As per their own website: “set amongst rolling sand dunes and coastal vegetation with spectacular views across Port Phillip Bay, the 18 hole layout has fast draining fairways and is kept in fantastic playing condition all year round.”. The rolling hills offer terrific views over Cape Nepean National Park. Rated in the top 5 public access courses.
Sorrento
Sorrento Golf Course is an immaculate, undulating course with all year playability set on a sand and limestone base. It is not an overly long course, but there are many challenging holes that require good course management. Beware of the strict dress code and the absolute requirement to book ahead.
Cape Schank
This is probably one of the best courses for your Corporate Golf day, but be aware that there is a strict dress code, and that only soft spikes are allowed on the course. If this paints the picture of a fastidious and well-maintained course, then you would be correct. Located at the Southernmost tip of the Peninsula with views over Bass Strait, this Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed course is truly magnificent.
